The Emergency Medicine Research senior elective is a research elective designed to include instruction in research methodology and medical literature. The student may participate in original research under faculty supervision or in on-going research projects with the faculty. Opportunities are provided for clinical studies as well as transitional bench work.

Duration
Clinical
This is not a primarily clinical rotation and there are no specific clinical responsibilities. Meetings and didactics take place in and around the UMMC Adult Emergency Department, and students are welcome to participate in the care of emergency department patients, but this is voluntary.
Didactics
Didactics are accomplished through small group discussions with the course director and cover the critical review of medical literature, medical research methodology and basic statistics.
Reading
Selected readings from textbooks are provided to students as are pertinent journal articles which exemplify the various types of medical research studies. Additionally, articles corresponding to the student’s specific area of interest are provided.
Grading
Grades are based on participation in meetings with the course director and progress on the student’s chosen research project.
Orientation
A thorough and informative orientation session is held for all students at which time they will receive their reading materials and further information as needed.
